Abstract: Vague language is a common phenomenon in language use. With the appearance of “Fuzzy Sets” theory posed by L. A. Zadeh in 1965, vagueness in language has been studied for years by many scholars who are gradually conscious of the importance of the study. It is used in many domains such as magazines, newspapers, political statements, law documents, and even advertisements. This paper aims to study the vague language from the view of linguistics, and analyze the pragmatic functions of vague language in English news. First, there is a brief introduction of vague language. Then, the paper lists the existence of vague language in English news. At the most important part, based on the CP, pragmatic functions of vague language are discussed. According to this paper, the news readers may understand the information delivered by the news correctly. At the same time, the journalists can be more natural, decent, and effective in delivering information. Key Words: vague language;news;pragmatic
