Abstract: Goldblatt is not only a famous American interpreter, but also current English field’s highest ranking interpreter in Chinese contemporary literature. This paper aims to discuss the inevitability in cultural misreading and its reasons. The reasons can be divided into two aspects. The first one is a subjective reason: the interpreter’s language background is differed from Chinese. The second one is an objective reason: the great difference between English and Chinese is also undoubtedly the culture obstacle while translating. This case summarizes the culture misreading in Red Sorghum and the effects it brings. The positive impact is its promotion of tolerance and the enrichment of literary genre, while the negative part is that we may sometimes misunderstand the original text and then prevent culture propagation and communication. Based on the analysis above, this paper concludes that in order to get more effective communication between different cultures, the interpreters are supposed to avoid the negative impact of cultural misreading. Key words: cultural misreading; Red Sorghum; negative impact
