Abstract: This study aims to investigate the reasons that lead to Tess’s tragedy in Tess of the d’Urbervilles. The thesis firstly attempts to find out the objective factors that are responsible for Tess’s tragedy. The sociological factors, environmental pressures and religious background all have strong influence. Tess’s own characters also account for her tragedy because she is portrayed as such a pure, innocent woman. She is doomed also partly because of her Hardy’s fatalism. The paper comes to the conclusion that a study of the causes of Tess’s tragedy are of great importance for critics and readers to understand Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

摘要：本文旨在研究分析《德伯家的苔丝》中苔丝的悲剧成因，文章首先分析了造成苔丝悲剧成因的客观原因。社会因素，环境压力，宗教背景都对苔丝悲剧的产生有很大的影响, 苔丝自身的性格因素同样导致自己的悲剧，她是一个纯洁而又坚强的女人。她的悲剧同样可归因于宿命论对哈代自身的影响。文章最后得出结论，对苔丝悲剧成因的研究对《德伯家的苔丝》进一步研究具有重大意义。
