Abstract:Although it is past, Shanghai World Expo brings us far-reaching influences on English learning: it has aroused college students’ interest in learning English and raised an English study boom. This thesis, in view of this phenomenon, conducts a research on the changes of influencing factors of English learning, contents of English learning and forms of English learning of students in Xuzhou Institute of Technology before, in and after the Expo time. An investigation is conducted into this study with the method of empirical research. By means of random sampling method, altogether 1000 sets of questionnaires are handed out to 1000 college students who come from 15 different departments of our college, and 900 effective responses are collected. The result indicates that the college students’ English learning has been greatly influenced by the Shanghai World Expo. First, social activities play a more important part in objective factors of college students’ English learning in the Expo time; in the meanwhile, among the subjective factors of college students’ English learning, enthusiasm and motivation of English learning is on the increases. Second, among five contents of English learning, college students pay more attention to listening and speaking than before. Third, they are more incline to take part in out-of-class learning and their abilities of self-learning have been developed. With the end of Shanghai World Expo, however, English learning enthusiasm is gradually on the decreases among college students. Therefore, the changes of English learning demand the changes of English teaching and learning inevitably. On the one hand, it depicts English learning’s correct direction of college students in Xuzhou Institute of Technology after the Shanghai World Expo. Learners should take a rational attitude towards English learning, follow rules of English learning and combine multiple forms of English learning. On the other hand, it suggests that university English teaching should reform in our school after the Shanghai Expo: it should aim at cultivating learning interest and improving motivation level and directing and encouraging students to choose out-of-class learning.
