Abstract:Since the 21st century, the cultivation of college students’ English learning autonomy has become a significant aim of college English teaching. This study makes an investigation on the second-year non-English majors’ English autonomous learning ability from five aspects: identifying what’s been taught, formulating the learning objectives, selecting and implementing appropriate learning strategies, monitoring the use of learning strategies and monitoring and evaluating the learning. The results show that the degree of autonomous English learning is at a low level. Based on the findings of the present study, some suggestions on how to cultivate the students’ autonomous English learning ability are put forward. Key words: autonomous English learning;second-year non-English majors; English teaching
