Abstract:Foreign word is both a cultural phenomenon, but also a linguistic phenomenon. Loanwords refer to words borrowed from foreign language, and it is an important part of Chinese vocabulary. It reflects the background of cultural exchange, and it records the history of cultural exchange. Throughout the history of Chinese to absorb English loanwords, we found that there are differences in degree in different historical periods, but generally speaking Chinese is still very open. Firstly, this article complied some of definition about English loanwords. However there are some different opinions. Through comparison and analysis of these views, i support that transliteration loanwords, transliteration and free-translation loanwords, transliteration add free-translation loanwords, half-transliteration and half-free translation loanwords, translation of imitation words, letters are English loanwords. There is no dispute. But in free-translation word, imitation words are considered as loanwords, the other English words was considered as new created words. Secondly, the article describes that the course of history, the reason, characteristics, type and influence of English loanwords in Chines. Finally, on the basis of analysis of English loanwords to bring the advantages and disadvantages of Chinese vocabulary development, we should put forward to reasonably use and specific English words, in order to promote the development of Chinese language.
