Abstract
Gatsby’s tragic fate is a product of a materialistic era. This thesis is to explore its internal and external causes to analyze the inevitability of Gatsby’s tragedy. By looking into the primary causes of his tragedy, we can learn how to avoid such a tragedy from happening in contemporary society. It is of great importance for us to keep a clear and focused mind and control our own fates in such a highly-developed society. The thesis tries to analyze the inevitability of Gatsby’s tragedy in the novel from three aspects: the social and historical background, the interpersonal relationship and Gatsby himself. It also discusses the significance of controlling our own fates.
