Abstract
Translation has evolved from an original model with the aim of disseminating information to assuming various missions nowadays. In particular, literary translation is subjected to rigorous demands for cultural communication and artistic expectation reasons. Therefore translators need to make much more efforts to meet the effect of words, an abstract product. Emotional textual features give a large room for the approaches of translation, which is not easy to grasp. Literary translation is neither a transformation between two languages nor a mere accumulation of information. Rather, it intends to generate a kind of aesthetic taste and emotional resonance. The theory of creative treason emerges as the times require in the environment surrounded by cultural diversity. This thesis explores the role that creative treason plays in literary translation, analyzing Eileen Chang’s short story Stale Mates as well as its Chinese version, which comes to a conclusion that creative treason is in possession of unique advantage in literary translation, so as to provide translators with a new perspective on literary translation.
