ABSTRACT
Poetic translation plays an important role in the process of language learning and in the area of translation. Hence the accurate translation is necessary for both the translators and readers to understand the work. Finding out the causes of defects and completing the poetic translation system is an emergent and indispensable task. However, some recessive elements are always easily ignored in this process of research. First of all, the ignorance of the social background and the misunderstanding of poet can bring meaning deviation between the original and the translated poetry. Secondly, how to keep balance between translating techniques and artistic conception is one large problem when doing poetic translation. Furthermore, translators, especially modern translators, whose individual translating styles and translating aims have great effects on the poetic translation lead readers to follow their thoughts to understand the work instead of learning about the original poem. Therefore, it is necessary to make a complete preparation before translation, know how to keep balance between creating image and translating skills and regulate all the translators’ behaviors. In this paper, three causes of the defects of Chinese and English poetic translation are analyzed and improvement strategies are put forward.
Key words: poetic translation; causes of defects; improvement strategies
