Abstract: Uncle Tom’s Cabin is a realistic masterpiece written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The novel describes the sufferings of Uncle Tom, the Georges and other slaves and reveals the evil of the slavery with the tortuous experiences of black people. This paper makes the analysis from two aspects: the sufferings of black slaves under slavery and brutal and bloody behaviors of southern slaveholders, and the influences of religion as the theoretical basis and weapons in anti-slavery movement. Through the analysis of the novel, this paper aims to demonstrate that, because of ruthlessness of slavery and people’s pursuing the freedom and equality, the anti-slavery movement rose out of the urge of humanism, and it embodies freedom and equality between different races. KEY WORDS: Uncle Tom’s cabin, Abolition Movement, Religion
