INTRODUCTION

Vivian Grey is Benjamin Disraeli’s first novel which was first published in 1826. The author Benjamin Disraeli was an English famous statesman and novelist. In general, he was interesting, and his writings full of striking thoughts, shrewd motto, and exquisite phrases which stick in the memory. In this novel, Benjamin Disraeli offers a comment on the political and social character of England in the early 1820s.  It has never been translated into Chinese and the translation of this novel is challenge for us.

My thesis contains two parts, including the part of translation, and the part of report on translation strategies. The part of translation deals with Chapter 1-5, Book II in the novel which tells the hero Vivian attracts the attention of the marquess in the London dinners. What’s more, he becomes the fair-haired boy in front of the marquess and the marchioness likes him quiet a lot. The marquess especially invites Vivian to attend the dinner party which is to be held in his castle. Vivian wants to embark on the road of politics through the Marquess.

In the part of report on translation strategies, I will review the development of translation. Then I will chase down the problems arising from my translation process and the solutions to them.
