INTRODUCTION The book China diary: the life of Mary Austin Endicott is a work of life writing that was published by Wilfrid Laurier University Press. These diaries are written by Mary Austin Endicott and collected by her daughter Shirley Jane Endicott. This book has recorded what Mary Austin Endicott had seen and learned in China and the great changes in the society of China, including the Northern Expedition, the War of Resistance Against Japan, the Cold War and so on. In this process, two chapters were chosen to be translated, namely Wartime in Chungking, Wedding Anniversary and Wartime Diary: 1939-41. These three chapters show readers that Japan has bombed the wartime capital -Chongqing for five and a half years during the period of anti-Japanese war, which has caused innocent civilians lost their lives and millions of people were displaced and unable to return home. Through description and in accordance with the order of time, the miserable life of people in Chongqing is reproduced in detail. The theme of the chapter 17 is wartime in Chongqing, including what the Nationalist Party did before the bombing, the scene of Japan bombed Chongqing for the first time and the Endicott family’s hard life in the wartime. The theme of the chapter 18 is Wedding Anniversary, including Mary Austin Endicott writes to her husband in their fourteenth wedding anniversary. The theme of the chapter 17 is wartime dairies, including the experience of the Endicott family retreat to Omei Mountain to escape war but got bombed again. |
