Abstract: Autonomous learning ability is essence for life-long learning, which meets the need of New Curriculum to develop English autonomous learning ability for students in junior middle school. Autonomous learning is able to improve the quality and efficiency of learning as well as cultivation of innovative ability. Based on the analysis of the teaching cases in junior middle, the author discovers the shortness of autonomous learning in some teaching modes in English class and confirms that it is unfavorable for students to improve their autonomous learning ability in such kind of classes. Some suggestions about how to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability is supplied at last. Key words: autonomous learning ability; New Curriculum; junior middle school students;
