摘要：从1776年以来，几乎世世代代的美国人都深深相信，只要勤奋、努力，并通过坚持不懈地奋斗，他们就能获得好的生活，而不是依赖特定的社会阶层和别人的帮助。“美国梦”是一个被众多美国人普遍信仰的信念。贯穿于美国文学的一个永恒主题便是“美国梦”。“美国梦”是在特定的条件下形成并发展起来的一种理想追求。那些能够在美洲新大陆上通过自身奋斗实现梦想的人群成为了美国人的象征，他们奋发图强、乐观向上；他们代表着美国人的形象、理想和价值观。几乎所有的美国作家都写过美国梦，但是就描写的广度和深度而言，却无人能比得上菲茨杰拉德。《了不起的盖茨比》和《夜色温柔》是司各特·菲茨杰拉德非常重要的两部小说，这两部小说的主人公迪克和盖茨比都有各自的美国梦，并用自己的方式去实现他们的梦想，但是最终却只落得梦想破灭的结果。本文一共有五个章节，第一章主要介绍本文论题的研究意义和研究综述。第二章和第三章分别阐述了《了不起的盖茨比》和《夜色温柔》中的主人公们的美国梦。第四章比较了这两部小说里的美国梦的相似性与差异。第五章是全文的总结。本文通过详细分析盖茨比和迪克各自的追梦历程，来揭露《了不起的盖茨比》与《夜色温柔》中的美国梦及其破灭的原因。
