Abstract:Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of discourse that views language as a form of social practice and aims at exploring the relation between language, power and ideology. CDA does not limit its analysis to specific structures of text or talk, but systematically relates these to structures of the sociopolitical context. Norman Fairclough developed a three-dimensional framework for studying discourse, where the aim is to map three separate forms of analysis onto one another: analysis of spoken or written language texts, analysis of discourse practice and analysis of discursive events as instances of sociocultural practice. Beloved is worldly regarded as a masterpiece of Toni Morrison, a famous American black female writer. The present thesis attempts to reveal how Morrison waves ideologies into the novel to achieve her writing purpose through a critical discourse analysis based on Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model -- text, discursive practice and social practice. Through a critical discourse analysis of Beloved, it is also found that Morrison tries to reproduce the true history of slavery and reconstruct the African American culture.
