Abstract
Tender is the night described a story at Jazz time. The story covered the pots that our protagonist walked from a scintillating doctor to a self-abandoned man who enjoyed the corrupted upper life. The protagonist Dick returned the hometown with abjection, and lived hopelessly during his rest life, which means the true disillusion of American dream. This paper is written in three aspects of historical background, plot development, and reason analysis to describe the disillusion of Dick’s dream---American dream. The character represented the Americans at Jazz time, who were addicted to the enjoyment and ignored the ideal and dream. And those people included the author Fitzgerald. The author Fitzgerald claimed himself of an idle state in most of his life by this story, making true the so-called total and miserable understanding of life.
Key words: American dream, disillusion, protagonist Dick
