This unit is from the Senior High School English Book for Senior 2, published by People’s Education Press. This unit is the second unit of this book, which focuses mainly on the United Kingdom. Through reading, students can know the history and geography about the UK, the composition of the UK and some places of historic interest. This unit is divided into three parts: Reading, Learning about the language and Using language. The first part is about the formation and development of the UK. This part includes some warming-up activities, pre-reading activities, reading activities and some exercises. The warming up activities aim at testing students’ prior knowledge about the UK. In the pre-reading section, there are three questions about the UK. Through these three questions, students can predict the content of the reading material. The reading material is an article about the UK which is introduced from the historical, geographical, cultural and political perspectives. In this part of Reading, students can know the formation and development of the UK, which helps students have better understanding about the UK. The Learning about language part concentrates on the vocabulary and grammar of this unit. Through certain contexts, let students use the vocabulary of this unit. This part provides some new words, like unwilling, enjoyable and clarify. The grammar of this unit is the past principle as the object complement. By doing some easy and funny exercises and tasks, students can understand this grammar better. The third part contains listening, reading and writing activities. The reading material is about the places of interest in the UK. By the pictures presented, it can develop students’ cross-cultural communicative awareness. In the listening section, students can not only develop their listening ability by listening to the tape but also enhance their analysis ability through answering the questions given. The writing section is about the tour guide presentation. In conclusion, This unit’s topic about the United Kingdom is appropriate to help students experience a foreign culture and enhance students’ cultural awareness.
