Abstract: Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional learner-centered approach that introduces learners into complicated and meaningful problem situation. In PBL, students work in groups to solve complicated real-world or authentic problems that they can not solve with their current level of knowledge. This study aims to investigate the application of PBL to English reading teaching in junior middle school. This paper clarifies the theoretical basic of PBL, analyses its research results in the last twenty years. Then based on the analysis of a specific teaching case, this paper attempts to make a summary of the advantages of PBL and reveal the efficiency and problems to the application of PBL in English reading teaching in junior middle school. In this sense, some suggestions are provided for the development of the application of PBL in English reading teaching.
