Abstract: The Great Gatsby, written by the American writer F.Scott.Fitzgerald, is considered as the symbol of American literature. This thesis explores the cause of the breakdown of Gatsby’s illusion by analyzing its origins and essence. It also uncovers the brutality of reality from perspective of the historical background and the cruelty of society.
