Abstract: Jane Eyre, the heroine of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, is originally a self-willed and irritable orphan. After meeting different kinds of people and experiencing a lot of things, Jane Eyre gradually adjusts her thinking and behaviors. Jane Eyre has improved and perfected herself so much that she finally grows to be a mature and independent women.. Through the analysis of Jane Eyre’s arduous process from her self-will to her self-adjustment and finally to her self- improvement, this paper aims to probe into Jane Eyre’s psychological growth from inferiority to independence. The first part mainly analyzes Jane Eyre’s inferiority, reflected in her self-will, irritability and unsocial manners. The second part demonstrates her self-improvement, reflected in her progress in thinking, behaviors and schoolwork. The third part chiefly analyses Jane Eyre’s pursuit of self-respect.
