Abstract: The untranslatability has always been the difficulty of the translation of culture-loaded words. And the translation of tour guide manuals plays a vital role in the development of local tourism. It also carries cultural connotation and the long history of China. Owning to large differences in region, religion, tradition and cultural image between English and Chinese culture, it seems very difficult to achieve complete equivalence in terms of culture-loaded words. The paper, by giving a good number of examples, especially the cases of Nanjing tour guide translation, introduces some methods of translating Chinese culture-loaded words, including transliteration, literal translation, and free translation and so on. These methods help to understand how Chinese culture-loaded words are transformed into and used in English. Key words:culture-loaded words; tour guide manuals; Nanjing; translation
