INTRODUCTION

The Scarlet Nightingale is a love story and the background of the novel set in Britain and France during the WWII. It is a story about love, danger and sacrifice and written by the best-selling novelist Alan Tichmarsh.

Rosamund Hambury, when she was 17, spent a long summer vocation in Devonshire. In the late 1930s, she came to London and had a fast-paced life in the upper class. When the mysterious Harry Napier pursued her in London, the war came unexpectedly, and at that moment, Harry was sent to the army. After the Blitzkrieg, Rosamund suffered devastating losses. After joining the Special Forces, she was sent to France on a top secret mission to fight alongside the resistance movement. It was in France that her courage and loyalty were truly tested.

The thesis is mainly divided into four parts. The first part is the brief introduction of the novel and the translation practice. The second part is the whole process of this translation practice, including the reasons of choosing this novel, how to deal with the original text, the process of writing the draft and the stage of polishing the translated text. The third part is the problems that I encountered while translating the text and  the corresponding solutions. And the last part is the conclusion of the translation practice.
