Lindsey Yoder won the first Michael Osborn Public Speaking Contest at the University of Memphis with the powerful speech that appears at the end of Chapter 14 and in My Communication Lab. Lindsey was then invited to present her speech on human trafficking to a community rally that involved hundreds of activists, church members, police officials, and city leaders. We asked Lindsey how she had selected the topic for her speech.“I did not choose my topic,” she said. “It chose me.”

If this were the way classroom speeches were usually generated, there would be no need for this chapter. Unfortunately, Lindsey’s experience is the exception rather than the rule. Most of us need help finding, refining, and adapting the topics of our speeches so that they fit assignments and the needs of our listeners. We have to follow a search process to generate the best of these topics. This chapter will describe this process and how you can conduct it successfully.

In the communication world that awaits you beyond the class, topics impose themselves upon you: Work concerns, community concerns, and political issues of the moment may all provide the impetus for your speaking. But the public speaking classroom typically offers one great advantage: It allows you to explore the universe  of topic possibilities to find just those best suited to help you find your voice. This freedom of topic selection helps you exercise your creativity and realize your potential.
