Chapter Nine

Building a life that is less disappointing than the one you already have

I wake up every single day confident in the knowledge that I will never write another good song. I tend to internalize a lot of things I’m upset about and put them into songs. That’s how I get it out of my head. When I was growing up, if I was mad or sad I would listen to music. So now, when I get mad, I try to use it in my music.

—Mark Hoppus (singer-songwriter, Blink-182

At this point, I’m just going to assume that you’re not afraid anymore. If you’ve gotten this far, it’s because you see the value in coming to terms with the fact that you’re not that great. But philosophy can only take you so far. What you need now is a plan of action. You need actual ways to start accomplishing all the shit you want to accomplish.

And this is where all the other self-help books have failed you. And everyone else. All the other self-help books basically tell you to do the same thing. They tell you that you’re great and that you’re important, and then they just leave you hanging out to dry, like a sex-soiled rag on the edge of the tub, telling you that you can just go about your life as you were before, but now with your new mentality, everything is suddenly going to go swimmingly. If you notice, this advice has done very little for anyone other than the authors, who have become fucking billionaires while you all just smile and laugh and smile and shit money into their bank accounts.

Okay, but enough about them. Let’s talk about you. Let’s talk about how we’re going to make you less not great.
