Elizabeth Strout is a famous American novelist. Her excellent works gained many prizes, and all of them won universal praise from the readers. What’s more, many works were translated and introduced into China. This practice selects chapter 5 to chapter 12. They are mainly about the stories of people that Lucy and her mother are both familiar with. These conversations help them know each other better and shorten the distance of them. Although the language in the text is plain and all the scenes are daily life, it’s still difficult to translate. Because this novel has plenty of conversations and lots of fragmented stories, so it’s not easy to translate some sentences with reference to the context. In essay part, the guiding principles of “faithfulness”, “expressiveness” and “elegance” and translation methods will be discussed in details. Translation methods as amplification, omission, literal translation and liberal translation are applied in the translation. Problems that encountered during the translation are also going to be described. It also tries to indicate the solutions accordingly. The summary part concludes the experience of this translation and the deficiencies. |
