INTRODUCTION

The Inner Life of Cats is written by Thomas McNamee, who is a celebrated American male writer. It is an animal literature about cats published by Hachette Books of New York in 2017. The author adopts narrative technique to study deeply the inner life of cats. He presents the whole process of cats’ physical and mental development by describing Augusta’s life.

The whole work contains eight chapters. Chapter 1 was chosen for practice. This chapter is an English text, containing 8,764 words. Because the target audience for the text is Chinese, therefore the language used in the translated version should reflect the style of the original version. Then Chinese readers will gain something from it and get similar enlightenment and feeling as source-language readers .

The thesis is mainly divided into the following parts, introduction of the thesis, the necessity of knowing the text’s background and methods of translation, some problems and solutions, and conclusion.

“Some problems and solutions” are the main body, which involves three questions, how to select suitable Chinese words to express source language and organize sentences well, how to translate passive sentences, and how to translate long sentences. Under each example, two versions are provided for a comparative study, and the reasons for the modification are also included.
