INTRODUCTION

The second chapter of In the Wake of the Jomon, by the contemporary writer Jon Turk, is selected in this translation practice. The work begins with the human skeleton discovered by anthropologists at the Columbia river in 1996, and further to speculate that prehistoric humans crossed the ocean to North America through small open ships. The work tells a story of adventure. Its protagonist, Jon Kurt and his like-minded friends experience a great adventure and they travel across the Pacific and eventually reach Alaska. On their way of exploration, they meet with many difficulties, but fortunately, they have always maintained a heart of good faith, kindness and braveness and endeavor to live.

There are four parts in this article. The first part is the introduction, which briefly introduces the background of the novel and the main content of the selected part. The second part introduces the process of translation. The third part mainly describes problems encountered in the translation and the basic methods for solving them. The last part is the conclusion and it concludes this essay by reflecting on my translation practice.

I hope this translation can accurately convey the original information and the author’s intention. To a certain extent, teenagers can be encouraged to be courageous, sincere and optimistic and form a noble outlook on life.
